[00:00] You're listening to the Still Us™ Audio Series — quiet conversations for couples in hard seasons, created by Tameka Lancaster, therapist and founder of Emotional Blueprint Academy.

[00:14] These aren't therapy sessions. They are guided spaces for when you feel stuck, sad, or overwhelmed — but aren't ready to give up.

[00:24] You don't need to solve anything right now. Just breathe, and let these words hold space for what hasn't been said yet.

[00:34] Whether you're listening together or alone, this is a place for truth without punishment, and connection without pressure. I'm Tameka.

[00:45] Welcome to Emotional Blueprint Academy. This is a Still Us™ conversation I wish every couple had access to — especially in moments of emotional overwhelm. It's for when you need to stop a conversation without making the other person feel like they just lost you.

[01:05] Let's be honest. Sometimes a conversation just gets too heated. It escalates too fast, too loud — even when no one's raising their voice.

[01:17] You feel the shift before it shows. Your shoulders tense. Your breath shortens. Your thoughts race.

[01:26] You want to stay engaged, but your body says: "I'm out. Check out. Or make it stop." And so you leave.

[01:36] Physically. Or emotionally. And your partner is left in a moment that feels like abandonment. But here's the truth.

[01:44] Pausing isn't the problem. It's how we pause that makes the difference. Most of us weren't taught how to step away with care.

[01:53] We learned to storm out. To slam doors. To snap. To suddenly go quiet in a way that says: "This conversation is over — and so is your access to me."

[02:08] But what if you could leave the conversation and still keep the connection? Let's practice how. Here are three phrases you can use in real time when your system is overwhelmed but your intention is still love. Say:

[02:29] "I'm overwhelmed — not walking away from you. Can we pause this conversation and return when I'm regulated? I want to continue."

[02:41] "I need time to come back with clarity, not react with reactivity." It might feel awkward, but it's safer than silence, and cleaner than anger.

[02:53] You're not shutting them out. You're inviting repair without making it feel like rupture. Pause and check in with your body.

[03:05] Where are you tense? Where are you holding emotion? Place a hand there. Say gently…

[03:15] …even silently, internally: "I'm allowed to pause. I don't have to disappear. They deserve clarity. I deserve calm."

[03:28] This moment doesn't have to end in rupture. It can end in protection — for you, for them, for the relationship.

[03:37] Before walking away, say: "I want us to come back to this. Not carry the weight."

[03:47] Send a clear return point. Even if soft. Plant it: "Is it after dinner? In thirty minutes — when I've calmed down?"

[03:57] That one sentence can change everything. Because it says: "This is hard. I'm not letting go of us." And most people, in the heat of a hard conversation, need that.

[04:10] You can pause without punishment. You can create space without severing connection. You don't need perfect language.

[04:20] You need honest intention. So when you actually, in moments of overwhelm, say: "I love you. I just need a moment to return to myself…"

[04:31] "…before I return to you." This conversation may not fix everything — but it's a start.

[04:39] And sometimes, the repair begins before the words do. If you need to revisit this — do. If you need space, take it.

[04:49] If you need to say something now, let it come through — even softly. For more tools to reconnect with care…

[05:08] Wherever you go from here — let it be honest, let it be kind, let it be Still Us.
